Great Room Project: Rafters
Until we started this Project, I’d never seen our attic. I’d wanted to see it, and had attempted a few times to do so, but was hampered by this pesky little quirk called “fear of heights.” Actually, it’s not so much a fear of heights as it is a fear of falling. I get nervous standing on a chair.
Our attic trapdoor is located directly over the stairs to the basement. It’s accessed by a vertical grain-bin ladder Monte attached to the wall. You actually have to go partway down the basement stairs before you can start climbing the ladder. I can climb 2, maybe 3 rungs, before having to return back to solid ground.
So I was excited when Monte got the ceiling lathes pulled off; I could finally see the attic!

The ceiling fan hangs on for dear life…

With all that space up there, it’s a shame we don’t have the money to turn it into a functional room.

It’s also a shame we can’t have a cathedral ceiling. We get so much light from the east attic window in the morning I always think there must’ve been a light left on in the Great Room.

The chimney. There’s a circle where a stove pipe used to be.
Coming Next: Removing the trim.
