Does cilantro retain its flavor when dried?
Fresh cilantro has a sharp scent with a kicky taste--people seem to either love it or hate it. I, for one, love it! And since Watkins provides superior spices, I was expecting their Cilantro would become one of my favorites. Instead, I was quite disappointed.
Some herbs lend themselves well to being dried--they retain much of their scent and flavor. Oregano, sage, mint, and rosemary are a few such examples. On the other hand, parsley, with its mild flavor, pretty much loses all its flavor when dried.
I thought that fresh cilantro was a strong enough herb that it could hold up to drying. However, Watkins Cilantro smells more like parsley or tea leaves than it does fresh cilantro. Upon tasting it, I could just barely make out the flavor; I could've easily mistaken it for Watkins Parsley.
I haven't tried other brands of dried cilantro to compare, so perhaps Watkins Cilantro is still superior. However, I don't plan to buy it again. I'll just stick to using fresh cilantro when I want that kick in my salsa.
