Seasons For Success

"To everything there is a season..."

After a couple months of mild weather (especially for Nebraska), we've finally been hit with snow and bitter cold. The high temp on Thursday was 2 degrees. But we've still got it better than some of my family in South Dakota and Minnesota. So if you, too, have been hit with a cold snap, read my 7 Tips to Keep Warm. (My family in Southern California can skip that part. )

Since I'm having to re-establish my website, I decided to get myself a program that will make it easier to update in the future. What that means for now is that most of the content isn't back up yet. So if you start clicking around on the site, you might come up with lots of empty pages. They'll soon be filled, I promise!

Gift Line Still Available

Watkins Lemon Creme Body Butter

The 2003 Gift Line products are still available! Here are some of my favorites that would make great Valentine's Day gifts. Click here for the online catalog.

Lemon Creme Body Butter. This smells like lemon pound cake or lemon frosting--you practically want to lick it off your fingers! It even has the consistency of lemon frosting. Non-greasy and feels luxurious. But what I really love about it is it stops the itching on my dry patches of skin--something no other lotion has ever done. 4.4 oz jar.

Root Beer Lip Gloss. Okay, so this lip gloss isn't part of the 2003 Gift Line, but I just had to include it because it's my favorite of the three lip glosses listed here. Even my husband said it was "quite tasty." .35 oz. No longer available.

Cinnamon Bun Lip Gloss. Another one that's quite tasty, with just a mild cinnamon taste. Actually, it tastes more like a milder version of the Gingerbread. .35 oz. No longer available.

Gingerbread Lip Gloss. I think this smells and tastes a lot like the Root Beer Lip Gloss. With a hint of ginger, cloves and cinnamon, I might add. .35 oz. No longer available.

Chai Latte. I've mentioned this one in previous issues, but it's worth mentioning again. So delicious! 7.5 oz.

Chai Cake

Chai Cake made with Watkins Chai Latte

Here's a spicy cake to serve your favorite Valentine!

Chai Cake

  • 3 tbl Watkins Chai Latte
  • 2/3 cup hot water
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1½ tsp Watkins Baking Powder
  • 1 tsp Watkins Cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp Watkins Ground Cloves
  • ¼ tsp Watkins Ginger
  • ¼ tsp Watkins Sea Salt
  • ½ cup butter or margarine
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp Watkins Original Double-Strength Vanilla
  • Heat oven to 325°F. Grease and flour an 8" round cake pan. Stir hot water into Chai Latte until blended. Measure ½ cup for cake and set aside 2 tbl for glaze.

Mix flour, baking powder, 1 tsp cinnamon, cloves, ginger and salt. Set aside. Beat sugar and butter in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed, scraping bowl occasionally, until fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla until smooth and blended. Gradually beat in flour mixture alternately with ½ cup Chai Latte until smooth. Pour into pan.

Bake for 25-30 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pan to wire rack. Cool completely, about 1 hour. Spread Chai glaze over top of cake, allowing some to drizzle down side. Sprinkle with additional cinnamon.

    Chai Glaze

  • 2 tbl butter or margarine
  • 1½ cups powdered sugar 1
  • tsp Watkins Original Double-Strength Vanilla
  • ¼ tsp Watkins Cinnamon Reserved
  • 2 tbl prepared Chai Latte from cake recipe
  • Grated cinnamon stick (optional)
  • For glaze, melt butter in 1-quart saucepan over medium heat. Stir in remaining ingredients until smooth. Drizzle glaze on cake. If desired, grate cinnamon on top as garnish.

    7 Tips to Keep Warm

    <typolist type="1">

Oil-filled electric radiators. One thing I don't like about central air is that I never really feel warm. The furnace kicks on and off according to its whim (okay, according to the thermostat), not how hot or cold I'm feeling. Which is why I love these radiators! They're a constant heat source, so if I feel cold, I can go stand over it and get warm. They're also great for warming up towels, blankets, and clothes. My husband and I are experimenting this year; we've shut off the gas furnace and are heating the house with 5 of these radiators. So far, so good--though I don't think it's saving us as much money as we'd hoped.

Flannel pajamas. I got a pair of flannel pants for Christmas one year. They've proved to be a most practical gift. I wear them to bed often. (My husband would prefer me in something much more silky, I'm sure.)

Flannel sheets. Much warmer than cotton! We even keep our flannel sheets on the bed during the summer when it's 100+ degrees out. But that's more because I'm always too lazy to dig out the cotton sheets from the closet...

Down comforters. It's amazing how much heat seeps out (and cold seeps in) through a flannel sheet, a blanket and a heavy quilt. The down comforter traps the heat better than anything else.

Fleece blankets. So lightweight--and so warm! I am amazed at this material. Heat one up on the radiator and wrap yourself up on those bitter cold nights. Sooo warmmm!

Cuddling with your sweetie--or pet. My kitty loves to cuddle, especially if you scratch his belly. Just like my husband...

Watkins Chai Latte or Cocoa. There's nothing like cuddling up with your Valentine under a fleece blanket and drinking a hot cup of Chai Latte while watching Lord of the Rings for the 12th time...
